IN BETWEEN

An uncertainty - a separate choice a disconnect - a silent voice neither here nor there a much different air” ~ Doug

This collection focuses on my experience as an immigrant at an intimate level. What are the emotions that have accompanied me over the years? I explore the sense of feeling “in between”, suspended between realities, an entity constantly morphing into a new being, still yet aspiring to the flow. I have created digital images and short video clips that are meant to capture some of these feelings. And thank you Doug for giving them a voice through your beautiful words.

SUSPENDED HEART
"Suspended... Ready to jump. Not ready to let go. And so, here I am. Dangling.
Swinging to and fro. Holding on or letting go? I'll let you know. When I know".

STANDING OR TRAVELLING WAVE?
In physics a “standing wave” is a wave that is fixed in place, oscillating back and forth, repeating the same oscillation forever without changing. A “travelling wave” is a wave that moves through a medium, so it has a direction and it carries energy. I am standing and travelling at the same time. The moving waves help me morph into a butterfly in search of her dreams.

8 WORDS AT A TIME
My friend Doug, who is also responsible for all the words used in my artworks, told me that he met a lot of immigrants who did not speak any English, but tried learning the language through popular POP songs, 8 words at a time. Though this is not my story, I thought that this idea was very interesting, because regardless of how good we can speak another language, communication intended as hearing and being heard is something different, which can happen only gradually embracing the other and opening our heart one step at a time. I chose some well known lyrics that may echo the condition of being an immigrant. I greyed out all words except one for each song. If you put together all the white words you will read:

Found Myself Again Eight Words At A Time”.
